How to Write Gutter Service Quotes That Win Jobs

Gutter quotes get compared by the linear foot. Here's how to spec materials, itemize downspouts, sell guards, and turn one job into a recurring client.

Why gutter quotes all look the same to clients

Gutters are a commodity in the client's mind: metal troughs, priced by the foot. When every quote reads "seamless gutters, $1,400," the client has no reason to pick anyone but the cheapest.

Your quote breaks the tie by being the only one that specifies what is going up, itemizes what comes down, and shows what you found on the fascia while you were up there. Detail is the whole game in this trade, because the product itself will not do the selling.

Price by the linear foot — with the material spec attached

Clients expect per-foot pricing, so give it to them, but attach the spec that explains your number:

  • 148 linear ft of 6-inch K-style seamless aluminum, .032 gauge, white — $11.50/linear ft: $1,702
  • Hidden hangers with screws, 24-inch spacing (not spike-and-ferrule)
  • Formed on site from coil stock — no seams except at corners

The two specs that separate real quotes from cheap ones: 5-inch vs. 6-inch (6-inch K-style handles roughly 40% more water — the right call under a steep roof or heavy tree cover) and aluminum gauge (.032 vs. the builder-grade .027 that dents when a ladder touches it). Name both, and the client now has a question to ask your competitor.

Itemize downspouts and extensions separately

Downspouts are where lump-sum gutter quotes hide their differences. Break them out:

  • 5 downspouts, 3×4-inch aluminum, white — $95 each: $475
  • 2 downspout extensions with splash blocks — $35 each: $70
  • 1 buried extension to daylight (12 ft, corrugated pipe) — $185

Oversized 3×4-inch downspouts on a 6-inch system move water a standard 2×3 cannot. When your quote counts and specs the downspouts and the competitor's says "downspouts included," yours reads like a plan and theirs reads like a guess.

Gutter guards are your add-on — name the product

Guards are the classic gutter add-on: high margin, genuinely useful under trees, and easy to present as an option rather than a pitch:

  • (Optional) LeafFilter-style micro-mesh guards — we install Raptor stainless micro-mesh: $8.75/linear ft — $1,295, with a 25-year material warranty
  • (Optional) Aluminum perforated guards (budget option): $4.50/linear ft — $666

Naming the actual product does two things: it separates you from the door-knocker quoting "guards" generically, and it lets the client research exactly what you install. Offering a budget tier keeps the add-on alive for price-sensitive clients instead of losing it entirely.

Quote cleaning, repair, and replacement as distinct offers

A client who calls about overflowing gutters may need a $180 cleaning or a $2,400 replacement. Do not guess for them — quote the ladder of options:

  • Cleaning and flush — clear all runs and downspouts, flush-test, photos before and after: $180
  • Repair — reseal 3 leaking corner miters, re-pitch 20 ft of sagging run, add 6 hangers: $340
  • Replacement — full spec above: $2,432

Presenting all three tells the client you diagnose before you sell. Many pick repair today and come back to you for replacement in two years — because you were the one who did not push it.

Document fascia and soffit condition while you're up there

You are one of the few trades that regularly sees the fascia up close. Put what you find in the quote:

"During inspection we found soft fascia board (approx. 8 ft) behind the north gutter run and two sections of stained soffit indicating past overflow. Photos attached. Fascia replacement is quoted at $14/linear ft if you would like it addressed before the new gutters go up — rotted fascia will not hold hangers."

This protects you (hangers pull out of rot, and now that is on record), justifies the work, and frequently adds a legitimate line to the job. The photos make it evidence, not upsell.

Turn cleanings into a seasonal recurring plan

A one-time cleaning client is a lead; a plan client is revenue. Put the plan in the quote:

  • Seasonal cleaning plan — spring and fall visits, flush-test and minor resealing included, photo report after each visit: $290/year (save $70 vs. two one-time cleanings)

Recurring plans smooth your shoulder-season schedule and make you the contractor already on the roof when the client finally decides on guards or replacement.

Build this quote in 60 seconds with AI

Every section above — the per-foot spec, the itemized downspouts, the named guard options, the cleaning/repair/replacement ladder, the fascia note, the seasonal plan — can be generated automatically. QuoteCrest's AI quote builder creates fully structured, professional quotes from a single prompt.

Try this prompt in QuoteCrest:

"Write a gutter replacement quote for 148 linear ft of 6-inch K-style seamless aluminum, .032 gauge, white, with hidden hangers at 24-inch spacing. Itemize 5 oversized 3×4 downspouts at $95 each, 2 extensions with splash blocks, and one 12 ft buried extension to daylight. Add optional Raptor stainless micro-mesh guards at $8.75/linear ft and a budget perforated aluminum option at $4.50/linear ft. Include a note that 8 ft of soft fascia was found on the north run with photos attached, quoted at $14/linear ft to replace, and offer a spring-and-fall seasonal cleaning plan at $290/year."

The AI generates the full structured quote with line items, options, and your branding applied automatically. See pricing or start your free trial.
